This weekend, my family's sweet dog, Bentley, was hit by a car and he did not make it. My family has been absolutely devastated by the loss of him. Isn't it crazy how a little animal can make such an impact on your life? I know it may seem silly, but he truly was a family member. He had the best personality and I am going to miss him so much. I feel broken hearted over knowing I won't see his sweet underbite or big brown eyes again and am repeatedly going over "what if" scenarios in my mind. I know that I am just grieving and that eventually I won't feel this terrible sadness, but it's so hard!! All dog's go to Heaven, right?
Have any of you lost a pet? Any tips for dealing with the grief of losing your furry, 4-legged friend?
I am so sorry about Bentley. It's always hard to lose one of your sweet companions! Your outfit is absolutely adorable though!

I am so sorry about your loss! I lost my dog when I was in middle school and the hardest part was adjusting to the whole that was clearly present in our household. While it took a while to do this when we finally felt we were ready we got another dog. Its not to replace the one that had past but to bring new joy to the house. My thoughts are with you and your family!

I am so, so sorry about your dog. My husband and I had rescued two dogs together when we first started dating and they had been permanent fixtures around our house for almost two years. One day I was playing with them out in the yard, went inside & came back out an hour later-one of the pups had passed away while we were inside. Then two weeks later our other dog went missing (we think he grieved himself to death/went looking for his buddy and never came back).
ReplyDeleteThe point of that is to tell you that it's okay to grieve. I know you feel like the rest of the world doesn't understand because to them it's "just a dog", but to you it's a family member. You'll miss him for a long time, I still find myself looking for our boys & missing them when they aren't with me to do all the things we used to do.
But it does get better. My friend told me after our boys were gone, "Dogs come into our lives to teach us about joy, dogs leave our lives to teach us about loss"

I have no lost a pet (other than fish) so I can't understand how you are feeling. However I can tell you that I'll feel the exact same way when that happens. I am so sorry for your loss, but little Bentley is in the best place he can be now! I'll pray for you, and I'm always here if you just want to chat or cry or whatever! <3

Aw, so sorry to hear about Bentley. Losing a pet is truly heart breaking. I think the most important thing to do when you've lost a pet is to allow yourself to feel sad. Really sad. My boyfriend's dog was diagnosed with late stage cancer and we had to make the tough decision to put her to sleep. We didn't want her to be in pain or afraid, and it was awful. We cried all weekend, gave her the best last day we could, and cried some more. We still get sad when we think about it, but grieving helped us move on and now we have another dog to fill the void. Hugs!

Sweet girl, I am so sorry for your loss! Pets really are members of your family. Both times we lost our family dogs, we waited three months and then adopted a new one each time. The joy from the puppies definitely helped heal our hearts!
